The Charité
Those who are looking for a university medical facility in Berlin today will rapidly find their way to Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, which is the joint university medical center founded by the Berlin government in 2003. All Berlin university medical facilities are united under the famous medical trademark “Charité” and located on four campuses around the city – Campus Benjamin Franklin, Campus Berlin-Buch, Campus Charité Mitte, and Campus Virchow-Klinikum.
The merger of the medical faculties in Berlin is an important culmination of a great tradition and changeful history that began with the erection of “plague house” in 1710 followed by its evolution into a world center of medicine in the 19th century: the Charité is now one of the largest medical faculties in Europe. At the same time, the merger of the university medical facilities appears to be the logical consequence of a historical development largely determined by evolution and change (of locations), most recently by the east-west political conflict.
We, the staff of the new Charité, regard the merger as a challenge and incentive to both internally and externally redefine our position and successfully continue this great medical tradition into the future. This process is now in full swing on all levels.
